Early Life and Career
Christian Friedrich Martin, born on January 31, 1796, in Markneukirchen, Germany was the son of Johann Georg Martin. Johann Georg Martin was a carpenter who also specialized in building violins. Christian was also strongly attracted to building musical instruments. At the age of 15, Christan Friedrich became a pupil of Viennese violin and guitar maker Johann Stauffer. It soon became apparent that he possessed a great deal of talent and was named foreman by Stauffer.
After this school, he returned to Marneukirchen and opened his own company in violin and guitar making with his father. The success they had with this was a thorn in the eye of the guild builders in the region. They had to compete with an ordinary carpenter.
Martin Guitars
After all kinds of harassment, Christian decided to emigrate to America. At 169 Hudson Street in New York, he opened a guitar store in 1833 and founded C.F. Martin & Co. New York remained a strange and impersonal environment for the German guitar builder, so in 1838 Christian decided to move to Cherry Hill, near Nazareth near Philadelphia. This was the beginning of what would become one of the most iconic guitar brands in the world – Martin Guitars. Since then, the Martin guitars have always come from Nazareth.
The first factory was next to his house. From 1839 to 1850, his instruments were sold through a New York agent on 385 Broadway.
After having lived in Cherry Hill for 18 years, Christian bought a piece of land near Nazareth. Because from there the connections and transport options were better. In 1859 he settled there with his family on the corner of Main and North Street. Soon the company, which at that time only consisted of six people, built 200 guitars a year.
Martin’s early guitars were modeled after the Spanish style, which was characterized by a wide fingerboard and a fan-braced soundboard. However, Martin was not satisfied with this style and began experimenting with new designs.
One of Martin’s most important innovations was the X-bracing system, which he introduced in the 1850s. The X-bracing system provided greater stability to the soundboard, resulting in a guitar that had a fuller sound and greater resonance. This design quickly became popular and remains a hallmark of Martin guitars to this day.
Another key innovation was the use of steel strings, which Martin introduced in the 1920s. Before this, most guitars were strung with gut or nylon strings. Steel strings provided a brighter, more vibrant sound and were better suited for the demands of modern music.
The Legacy of C. F. Martin
Christian Frederick Martin died in 1873, aged 77, but his legacy lived on. Under the leadership of his son, C.F. Martin Jr., the company continued to grow and innovate. Martin Jr. introduced many important innovations, including the dreadnought guitar, which remains one of the most popular guitar styles today.
Christaans Jr.’s son Frank Henry, was head of the next generation. Frank Henry was also a smart businessman, who was hit by the currency greatly increasing the popularity of the banjo, ukelele, and mandolin. The reputation the company had already built up, spread this even more.
Today, Martin Guitars is still family-owned and operated and is considered one of the finest acoustic guitar makers in the world. The company has a long list of famous musicians who have played Martin guitars, including Eric Clapton, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan.
In recognition of his contributions to the world of guitar-making, Christian Frederick Martin was inducted into the American Classical Guitar Hall of Fame in 2008. His name is now synonymous with quality, innovation, and a commitment to excellence that has defined Martin Guitars for over 180 years.
