Some American Squier guitars had no serial number stamped on the headstock but a number without a prefix on the neck plate. A date with such a number is difficult to determine. For more details about these serials see Fender Serial Number Lookup.

Japanese Serial Number

The Japanese “Made in Japan” Squier guitars were made by FujiGen until 1997 and the Japanese “Crafted in Japan” Squier by Tokai and Dyna from 1997.

The difference between Squier guitars “Crafted” and “Made” in Japan is not the quality of the instrument but has to do with contractual agreements that Squier made with FujiGen Gakki Corp. The guitars produced by FujiGen Gakki are “Made in Japan.”

Since 1992, other Japanese companies such as Yamano Gakki have also produced Squier. These guitars are “Crafted in Japan” because only FujiGen Gakki owned the rights to use “Made in Japan.”

Korean Squier guitars with a black logo on the headstock always have a thin laminated body. They are the lowest quality Korean Squiers. They were built between 1992 and 1995.
The serial number starts with CN or VN followed by 6 digits.
The letter “C” stands for manufacturer Cor-Tek, and the letter “V” for manufacturer Saehan.
The letter “N” stands for the 90s, the first digit for the year.

The Squier silver logo was used for models built in the late 80s and for the Squier Series Strats, built in 1992 and 1993.
Squier guitars with a gold-colored logo have an alder body or ash wood if it is from the ProTone series. These Squiers have been produced since mid-1995.

Squier FSR Guitars

Squier FSR stands for ‘Fender Special Run‘. These guitars were made “exclusively” for individual dealers and built to their specifications in limited editions. Many Squier FSR guitars are simply modified versions of existing models. For example, the pickup type was changed or the neck was changed to a different wood type and neck profile. With all the different electronics, necks, and bodies that can be mixed, countless combinations are possible. However, some models in the FSR range are finished in a separate color. This is often the case with Squier FSR models.

Indian Serial Number

Some Squier II were produced in India around 19891990, with “MADE IN INDIA” on the headstock. The Squier II made in India seems to follow the numbering scheme in the USA.

The serial number is on a sticker on the back of the neck, close to the attachment point with the body. Some more recent Squier guitars, including the Vintage Modified series (the serial number starts here with SH), were introduced in 2007.

The VM series has “Crafted in India” on the back of the headstock. With this VM series, the serial number is stamped on the headstock and therefore has no sticker.
