PRS Serial Number

PRS stands for Paul Reed Smith Guitars. The company began building guitars in 1985. A serial number can help you find when your PRS guitar was made.

Most PRS serial numbers start with a year prefix, so the serial number is usually the first place to look when you want to identify the year of manufacture. It can also help you check whether the guitar matches the right model line.

Where to Find a PRS Serial Number?

Start with the back of the headstock. That is the most common location on PRS guitars. You will usually find the serial number there on set-neck models, S2 models, many basses, and most SE guitars.

If your guitar is an older bolt-on CE, EG, or Swamp Ash Special, check the neck plate on the back of the guitar. Bolt-on PRS basses also use the neck plate.

If your PRS is an acoustic, look at the label inside the soundhole.

How to Read a PRS Serial Number?

Most PRS serial numbers begin with a year prefix. This is the first digit, or two digits, in the serial number. It tells you the production year. After that comes the rest of the serial number, which usually shows the build sequence for that model line.

On older PRS guitars, the year prefix is often one digit. That can create overlap between decades. For example, the number 5 can mean 1985, 1995, or 2005. The number 8 can mean 1988 or 1998.

On newer guitars, PRS switched to two-digit year prefixes, which makes dating much easier. The digits 08 means 2008, the digits 14 means 2014.

Use this chart of common PRS prefixes to determine the year your guitar was made:

PrefixYear
51985, 1995, 2005
61986, 1996, 2006

Here is the basic reading order:

  1. Read the year prefix;
  2. Identify the PRS line;
  3. Read the rest of the serial number using the correct format for that line.

PRS does not use one single format for every guitar. A U.S. set-neck model, an older CE, an SE, and an acoustic can all use different serial number structures after the year prefix.

For example: 5 22876.
The prefix 5 means the guitar could be from 1985, 1995, or 2005. You need use the model type and the serial range to decide which one fits.

PRS Set-Neck Serial Number

Most U.S.-made PRS set-neck guitars have the serial number on the back of the headstock. After the year prefix, the remaining digits show the sequential order of set-neck guitars built.

On older guitars, the year prefix is usually one digit. On newer guitars, it is usually two digits.

The chart below shows the serial number range after the year prefix.

Neck Plate PRS Serial Number

Some older PRS guitars have the serial number on the neck plate on the back of the guitar. This system was used on older CE models, EG models, Swamp Ash Special models, and bolt-on PRS basses. The first part is still the year prefix. After that comes the model code. Then comes the sequential number for that model.

That model code is the key:

  • A 7 or CE points to a CE model.
  • A 5 or EG points to an EG model.
  • An 8 or SA points to a Swamp Ash Special.
  • A 4 points to a bolt-on PRS bass.

Older CE guitars use neck plate serial numbers. Early guitars use the code 7. Later guitars use CE. 1998 is a transition year, so both 7 and CE can appear.

  • R12345 = 2017 (Korea)
  • IC7643 = 2016 (Indonesia)

PRS Bass Serial Number

PRS basses use more than one serial number system. The format depends on the bass type. The main groups are bolt-on basses, set-neck basses, and later Electric Bass models. The serial number location also changes by model. Bolt-on basses use the neck plate. Set-neck and Electric Bass models use the back of the headstock.

Bolt-On PRS Bass Serial Number

Bolt-on PRS basses use the code 4. The serial number is on the neck plate on the back of the bass. After the year prefix, the code 4 shows that it is a bolt-on bass. Then comes the sequential number. This system was used on bolt-on basses from 1989 to 1991.

4 0001 to 00301989
4 0031 to 01401990
4 0141 to 02001991

Set-Neck PRS Bass Serial Number

Set-neck PRS basses use the code 9. The serial number is on the back of the headstock. After the year prefix, the code 9 shows that it is a set-neck bass. Then comes the sequential number. This format was used on bolt-on basses from 1986 to 1991.

Serial NumberYear
EB 00007 to 000722000
EB 00073 to 001992001

PRS Acoustic Serial Number

PRS acoustic models were added in 2008. The acoustic serial chart begins with A09, so the published year list starts with 2009. On these guitars, the serial number is on the label inside the soundhole.

U.S. PRS Acoustic Serial Number

Regular PRS acoustic serial numbers begin with A and then a 2-digit year prefix. The remaining digits are the sequential number. Serial number A21 0345 points to 2021. Serial number A23 0128 points to 2023.
